This montage of AT &T ads came from a 1993 Newsweek CD-ROM, when Newsweek thought that one day, magazines would be sent to you in CD-ROM form, sponsored with ads. It's an interesting view of the future.

Well... AT&T is behind a lot of the founding technology that lead to these advances and products.

I don't doubt that at all. AT&T Is Behind A Lot of crappy technology as well. (Not saying any of this is crap), it's not, but don't get me started on AT&T's wireless service.

Um yeah. Those existed a long time before flat panels.

AT&T is a lot more than a wireless provider. Its funny how nowadays people only think of them as a cell phone company, when they have a 100 year history of being a telecom pioneer, dating back to the first telegraph lines in the 19th century.

Really i didn't know that.........

But I'm pretty sure that AT&T, being a very big company in itself, is separate from any of the other things. Cingular bought AT&T, merged the services, and changed their name to AT&T.
Array ( 1 month ago by tpaladino)
Um no. AT&T corporate changed the name of their wireless division to 'Cingular'. Cingular didn't exist except on paper. AT&T then decided to change the name back a couple of years ago for branding purposes. Nobody bought it.

Ha! No. Anybody who was an AT&T customer then could tell you that AT&T did exist but they wished it didn't. AT&T and Cingular were both around in the same era.

Not surprising ... ( 1 month ago by TheFranzX)
Not surprising since the ads are only about 15 years old, even though everything in that ad looks like a mix between the 90s and Blade Runner. Although, with the toll pay device in the car having its screen go red, I was expecting the car to fly off the bridge. Too much Sci-fi

I've been an customer since they were pacific bell wireless (later to become pacific bell mobile). after the first name change, the pacbell wireless services (i believe called SBC by then) combined with BellSouth on a joint nationwide GSM venture called Cingular. AT&T Wireless also existed as a separate spinoff of the AT&T parent company and was purchased by Cingular. SBC then merged with the AT&T parent company and bought BellSouth and took the AT&T brand name for all services.

Really funny when you think about 1993 and how these were mere CONCEPTS at the time! Makes me laugh and...Makes me feel...OLD!
What's amazing is ... ( 3 weeks ago by kd1s)
What's amazing is that every one of the technologies mentioned in these ads is part of todays world. I wonder how many patents the then AT&T held on this stuff and what the new at&t holds still. Of course AT&T completely missed the mark on quite a number of things but most of that was Bell Labs work. I lament the passing of Bell Labs from a pure research laboratory to a market driven laboratory.

AT&T sucks. They didn't deliver any of this shit except a over priced Cell phone TV service.

Odd thing is, there are still a lot of these (opening doors with voices??? Tickets at ATM's?) we still don't have. Those that did materialize - hope everyone knows ATT had little to nothing to do with.

-fire a book, 1000s of miles away =
Net connection.
-Attend a meeting in your bare feet + -Touched your baby from a phone booth + -learn special things, from far away places = Net station/booth + webcam -Crossed the country, without stopping for directions = GPS is commonplace. -Send someone a fax from the beach = Tablet PC + net connection
+ fax software. -Pay a toll without slowing down = EZPass
-Buy concert ... ( 2 weeks ago by livardo)
-Buy concert tickets from cash machines
Net connection, buy from home. Self serve kiosks will sell you event tickets.
-Open doors with the sound of your voice. Not practical, but possible today. RFID or bluetooth technology would work better. -carried your medical history in your wallet? Electronic Medical Records are not standardized. Needs work. -Watch the movie you wanted to, the minute you wanted to?
iTunes movie rentals, Pay Per View on Demand.

Actually AT&T will probably be the first wireless provider in the US that would bring you video conferencing on your cell phone in the United States.
