Bill Thompson is "Droopy". But the narrator (and most of the other voices) is John Brown, a tragic figure in radio and TV {he was "Digger O'Dell" and "Jim Gillis" on radio's "THE LIFE OF RILEY"}. Brown was blacklisted in 1952, and only Tex Avery would give him regular employment in Hollywood. Brown died of a heart attack in 1957.

One of the things I liked about this cartoon was that they took the risk of making Droopy out of character. He wasn't slow or fat or even looked old. In fact, he looked like a young pup. The whole thing paid off big time. This is one of the best Droopy cartoons where Dixieland will remain immortal. BRAVO TEX!

This cartoon represents of one of Tex Avery's strongest pieces. Amazing heavily stylized animation along with simplistic but extremely well designed backgrounds. Reminiscent of the UPA style so popular in 50's. Lots of wonderful strong shapes and intentional color. Loved it as a kid and still love it now. It's also funny as hell:)

Ah so John Brown the cartoon charactor voice was 'blacklisted'. For being a communist sympathizer? Hollywood is well known for selling out the country in various ways sometimes at great cost. Look at jane fonda posing for pictures on an anti-aircraft gun used to shoot down US jets siding against her country. And modern day actors too (liberals). But I was just curious. Communist sympathizers, then and now, are a huge part of Hollyweird after all.

It's what got me into the whole dixie land jazz genre. i'm not sure what song they were playing, but this cartoon is one of my favorites, and if it's not in a museum somewhere, it needs to be!
