Luciano Pavarotti singing from a concert in January 1980 with the NY Philharmonic cond. by Zubin Mehta. Compare this performance with other (later) dates; Pavarotti here is clearly still in absolute total command. This was part of the "Live from Lincoln Center" 30th anniversary special.

And yet he apparently did not regard himself as the best tenor of his time. Obviously no one could say such a thing about themselves, but when he names other tenors he believes were better, he sounds quite sincere to me. Perhaps he never could hear himself without being critical of his voice in a way he would not be with others? Sinatra said something like that about his recordings.Drove him mad because he could hear all these mistakes he'd made even if no one else could.

Indeed another classic performance considered by many to be his finest rendition of Nessun Dorma. Icpeto... What we have here are two magnificent performances (NYC & Paris) that can only be separated by personal preference. These performances demonstrate LP at his very best, they are the apotheosis of LC's talent and ability, and are truly incomparable.
