its about the events that go on within a blue collar town in ohio (Xenia). it mainly follows the two boys who spend most of their time killing cats and doing random things such as going to see a retarted whore and sniffinf glue. yeah, the movie does not have a regular plot line with a main problem that in the end is solved in some way, but I think it is pretty obiously what its about. also, its a very experimental film to so you have to have an open mind. I personnaly LOVE this film, its amazing

It really doesn't have a plot (other than like you said, the two teenage kids and what they do). It's kind of a bizzare film (although I'm a huge fan of it). As far as it's concept, I have some theories, but I'm not 100% sure if they're correct. It mainly depicts life in a poor, rural town. Most of the characters are going through difficult emotional times. Korine's films are usually pretty bizzare and abstract, which I tend to like. I heard that the retarted whore was actually the guys sister.

This is again another stupid response from someone who lived obviously quite many years but still didn't get that movie making should be diverse and not just about money and popcorns. It's just a shame that America has all its money wasting on crap movies and making more money on people who are lazy to use their brains and get offended by everything. Go watch Spiderman, etc. Those movies are for you. I feel really sorry for you. By the way Gummo is very well done. In Europe it'll do very well.

By the way Dog Days (HundStage) Austrian movie is similarly about people with no perspective and and shocking habits. I actually think that Dog Days is better than Gummo.

I watched this movie, i tend to ramble on and theres not nearly enough room here to state my opinions fully, yes supposed to be pointless, i'd imagine harmony thought himself artistic by some means in doing this film. I too had the same reaction, probably watches easier on marijuana (not that im opposing the substance). i've seen sick kids, but this isnt normal for a whole city, probably just to put into perspective if a bunch of these kinda kids lived relatively close. thanks for reaction, bye!

Consider it a contemporary lord of the flies - it's looking at the current culture and thinking how it would develop if it were unbridled, it's unpleasant because it shows the worst that's in people. It's criticising culture, and it's not so much a story as a hypothetical documentary, following around youths that could be, a less radical clockwork orange.
If anything it encourages finding something to live for by showing what nihilism can inspire. That's my opinion, fully understanding yours.

gummo is one of my favorite ever films but i totally understand when people react to it like this. but gummo is one of those few films which meant to be veiwed as a film with a plot or anything, but more of an insight into something. and its a beautiful film, but many people dont care about these types of films and just want action n plot and will never get films like this and thats kl !

im glad you are asking about it,and not just calling it stupid and writing it off. i didnt get it at first,i thought it was just a movie to show how fucked up kids are these days,but its more than that. you will find human compassion in the STRANGEST moments of that film, and often times you will find compassion in the strangest people and moments in real life. at least thats what this movie means to me. its less a "plot/story" movie,and more of an art project,in my humble opinion.
