I think this ... ( 4 months ago by stargazer3k)
I think this hypothetical, massively long rod would also be massively heavy and it would bend space-time and affect it in who knows how many different ways as a result.
This hypothesis has ... ( 3 months ago by nowellian)
This hypothesis has been proven by atomic clocks in orbit at high altitudes. Time has slowed by nanoseconds in these experiments!
Read the science journals!
i don't understand ... ( 3 months ago by saleall)
i don't understand this.. that the time ticks slower to the one who is moving fast. what does a distance have to do with time?. this is wrong. if you were about to travel from America to Europe and buck to America close to speed of light, then it would take you some micro second or seconds. for your friend you have been away just for some seconds. and you who have traveled to Europe and back wouldn't experience any time dilation of course.
A way to understand ... ( 2 months ago by Edmund18021988)
A way to understand it is to think of the image of yourself that you project, which travels at exactly the speed of light; if you were to move away from the earth at the speed of light for one year, the image of you would also be traveling for one year. When you look back at earth you would see the image of where you took off a moment after having taken off. It would take a year for your new image to travel back to earth for them to see. Thus, they age much more than you.
well ..if i was ... ( 2 months ago by saleall)
well ..if i was able to travel to the distance that light have traveld for 65 million years instantly.. then if i observ back our earth .. then wouled i see the living dinosaurs on earth.??
Yes, because that ... ( 2 months ago by Edmund18021988)
Yes, because that would entail traveling faster than the speed of light. You would go back in time. Time slows down as you approach the speed of light and reverses as you exceed the speed of light.
It would take a year to safely accelerate to the speed of light and another year to safely decelerate. Since time stops at the speed of light, you could get almost anywhere in the galaxy and only age two years.
Think of the original Planet of the Apes.
ok. then as i ... ( 2 months ago by saleall)
ok. then as i understatnd what you mean is that the time also travels as fast as the speed of light? i say "NO"!. the time is not something that travels thru a space or dimension. so a TIME is a mesurment of "HOW LONG will it take for me to do something" so even tho you will see the living dinosaurs on earth you still havent traveld to the pased. what you did is you just traveld to the point where the light that have reflected from earth at that time havent reached yet. so the time is still ther
Is that 2 years of ... ( 2 months ago by Brainman94)
Is that 2 years of Earth time - or 2 years as measured by the clock on board your spaceship as you accelerate and relativistic time dilation effects progressively increase?
That would be 2 ... ( 2 months ago by Edmund18021988)
That would be 2 years as measured by the clock on your spaceship. Much more time would have passed on earth and for everyone who wasn't travelling so close to the speed of light.
Absolutely bizarre...

Two separate ... ( 1 month ago by JohnnyRock2000)
Two separate particles travel at the speed of light toward each other....how fast is each of them travelling, relative to each other...2 times the speed of light? But nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. How can a particle be perceived as travelling 2 x the speed of light.

so if someone traveled in a craft 2000 light years away and back, it would seem brief but they would be on earth 4000 years in the future?

I wonder why all the politicians don't adopt the same technique :)
what about light? ... ( 1 week ago by JetJockey87)
what about light? It travels at the speed of light and it hasn't disappeared, in fact if it did disappear at the speed of light then light wouldn't exist, no one could perceive anything and the world most likely would still be primordial soup. Get your physics right.
OK here's how ... ( 1 week ago by JetJockey87)
OK here's how scientist proved time dilation (someone clean up for me plz?).
2 Atomic clocks were built in Grenwich (the center of the earth where all time zones originate from. These atomic clocks are incredibly accurate to picoseconds(0.00000001 of a second or something), they were both synchronised at ground level, one was put on a round trip around the globe on a concorde or SR-71, one stayed in Grenwich. When they were both reunited the one that made the trip had less time on it.
Light is a pure ... ( 1 week ago by nctrls2)
Light is a pure energy that travels and it will disappear when it hit an object, It might turn into another energy... I said.. that if you travel on the speed of light (which is impossible) You will turn into an energy and disappear or die... Just like electricity when it used up it will turn into another kind of energy.
This blew my mind ... ( 1 day ago by felicity4711)
This blew my mind when I saw it as a child. But there's an unspoken conceit in the example; if Paolo had driven around the village at near light-speed, decades would not pass from the villagers' POV. I think he would return to his starting place the instant after he left, while for him, even less time than that would have passed. Otherwise, why wouldn't the villagers see him in slow-motion, almost a statue, slowly making his way around the village over the course of decades?
If it's unbreakable ... ( 1 day ago by felicity4711)
If it's unbreakable, nothing should happen to it when the two people pull on it...?
It will only cause ... ( 1 day ago by felicity4711)
It will only cause us to age rapidly from the point of view of people in other solar systems. From our own point of view we would still age normally. No Dracula-in-the-sunlight effect for us. :-)
So then.. we will ... ( 2 hours ago by anirvanroy84)
So then.. we will never find life outside our solar system because we each perceive the other to age rapidly to extinction.
