you are right in it francesca, he explained carefully why he keep the position in Germany, even not been a Socialist Nacionalist. We know now so many details about these people but it is, because they lost the war. If they would not lost the war others war crimes will be known and are unknown. How many others holocausts are hiden in history? Southamerica?? Middle East?? Asia???
Did Toscanini ... ( 2 months ago by kellnergram)
Did Toscanini really do that? What a courageous thing to do! Hat's off to you, Arturo!
But, indeed art and courage don't always go together. Furtwangler w/ the Nazis, and Elia Kazan (diector of Streetcar named Desire, On the Waterfront) naming names at the heinous HUAC (House UnAmerican Activities Committee). Is it career-furtherance or a failure of moral nerve or a bit of both?. But I wonder what I would do? I can only hope I'd do the right thing - but it IS clear what the right thing is.

Yes.My father was a studentof piano at the conservatory in Milan. He was drafted into the Italian army. When Mussolini commanded Toscanini to play for him and Maestro refused, he did, indeed have Toscanini slapped around. When my father heard this,he left the Italian army, AWOL, joined the Partisans under the command of the martyr, Mina. My father also joined the British Intelligence Service. He fought against his own country and paid dearly. On his deathbed he said,"I did my duty."

Thanks to people like my parents, the war was not lost. One can only hope that courage and the love of liberty will motivate people in the end. I am not my parents and only hope I would have done the same thing. Those who were quiet, even though they lost the war, remained in power and made fortunes. Fighting against one's country is very expensive indeed. But that's how much he loved it. We still speak Italian there.Nich Deustch.Down with Berlusconi, and all others like him BTW.

Does anyone have the first movement of Furtwangler's Beethoven's Ninth. Forget the politics. He's my favorite conductor also or I would never have been here. PS, was that Goering with the bandage on the nose? Wish I'd done that!

Thank you very much.My father died ten years ago on the 21st of this month. He was very lucky. He lived; many Partigiani who gave their lives. My father was tortured and did not disclose information--another timein San Vittore sentenced to be shot at dawn when the Allies bombed Milan and the prison crumbled and the guards and the political prisoners walked out. He didn't consider himself a hero, just someone who did his duty. Thank you for honoring his memory.

It's a deeply touching document. unfortunately, we can't see the end of this clip when Wilhelm Furtwangler takes a cloth to clean up his hands after saluting Hitler. I think Furtwengler was, among Bruno Walter (NOT Karajan) one of the best performers of Beethoven's artwork ever. He is still making us surrender for a single minute of Beethoven's 9th symphony. If you wanna know more about this topic I strongly recommend you the film "Taking Sides"

just to point out a minor error, he cleaned up his hand after shaking hands with goebbels. it has been said that he carried the baton on his right hand on purpose so that he could avoid giving the nazi salute.

Furtwangler was at pains to let the world know that at this concert he made no Nazi salute and, immediately after this shot ended, he wiped his right hand clean with the hankerchief he had in his left hand. Nonetheless, in my opinion he made a huge mistake in not having joined Klemperer, Walter and other anti fascists and anti-nazis in exile before the war.
