Shostakovich hated the Soviet government and blatantly opposed them in his music...but got away with it because they could use his music as propaganda. The government claimed this symphony was about Leningrad and the Nazi's destroying it...but as "gonnakillyou" said, Shostakovich said in his later
life that the symphony was really about "the Leningrad that Stalin destroyed and the Nazis merely finished off."
