I like both gangs. But I admire the Sharks for their AMAZING dancing! They are all amazing dancers, but at the dance, I felt like they just had more... grace.

Im just about to embark on the journey to performing this show at my college! I am Riff so naturally I have to prefer the Jets haha! I do agree that Sharks have amazing dance parts but my favorite dance is during 'Cool' The Jets are more agressive and manic in thier dancing whilst the Sharks are more fluid and technical. Both sies are great dancers but for different reasons! Jet songs all the way though :P

GermCon has it all wrong. Tony is just about the only guy in both groups who is worth anything. For one thing, he's the only one who had a job, for another, he wanted to marry Maria with her parents permission. GermCon just has some real totalitarian ideas about ethnicity and culture.

Cor this bit always makes me shiver! It's brilliantly diverse with the gangs' violent, paranoid war songs matched up with tony and maria's beautiful love song. 2:56 really gets me going, as all the voices come together in an amazing way. Bernstein was truly a genius!

0:31 someone is sharp, this is always the problem with this number; the song is so dramatic and the rhythms so energetic, yet the pitch that the jets and sharks have to sing at is so low that excellent control is needed to keep everyone in tune. performers often disregard this, focusing instead on preventing the high notes from being flat. the other end of the range is just as important.

These performers are perfectly capable of singing in tune in that range. It isn't very low. Bernstein was notorious for conducting music to the extreme. I've heard the NYPhil under his baton (mainly the brass section) push so far in volume that it goes out of tune. A lot of people don't like that Bernstein demands this, but it sounds fucking incredible. I'm sure Bernstein asked them to sing that part aggresively, probably in the nature of a gang member. The intonation was intentional

Yeah you're probably right that Bernstein wouldn't have asked them to sing out of tune, but I still saw the intonation here was intentional. I am a musician, a professional one, but DEFINITELY not at the level of these performers. I can testify that there is nothing in this piece that is difficult to keep in tune. If you want to here low register, listen to Koyaanisqatsi. Anyway, they are perfectly capable of singing in tune, and the intonation is almost exactly 1 half step apart.

....exactly 1 half step apart. This actually, if you are going to go with the idea that someone is "incorrect" would require you to change your statement. Someone isn't singing out of tune, they are just singing the wrong note (in tune).
