Because in the US cutting on the cross means cutting on the straight grain that runs from selvedge to selvedge. Cutting stright means on the straight grain that runs end to end along the length of the fabric. True bias is at 45 degrees to the straight grain. All these cuts have different characteristics and applications.

I always wondered why people would use miniskirts in times of prosperity and long skirts (which need more fabric and therefore are more expensive to make) when the economy is depressed. Do you have any insight about why this phenomena always happened throughout the 20th century?
