The Kent's raised Kal-El so his personality as Clark is equal in sincerity to Superman. He has a duel identity so he can have a normal life. A difference between the two is necessary or else his cover would be blown.
However, if you read the old Superman comics from 38-39 it is pretty funny because he just likes fucking with people. Clark acts like a coward just so he can laugh at Lois behind her back. Superman picks up criminals and drops them to their death...
