Christopher Hitchens gives a talk in Canada on Free Speech in November 2006. This is the end of the twenty minute speech originally from One Good Move: http://onegoodmove.org/1gm/1gmarchive/2007/03/free_speech_6.html
Hitchens is right that religion should be treated with ridicule, hatred, and contempt.

Well said Hitchens, well said. It's high time we disposed of this mental relic.
Yes, it can. ... ( 5 days ago by travishenrichs)
Yes, it can. Because unlike atheism, religion can pose as a doctrine; a way to live your life. To conform to the religion you would have to practice it, and if it calls for something immoral or evil, the action must be committed in order to stay true to that faith. Atheism on the other hand is nothing more than a label to describe those who do not believe in the existence of a supreme being.
He said treat ' ... ( 5 days ago by travishenrichs)
He said treat 'religion' with ridicule not the religious. He is simply advocating others to oppose the idea of faith; the strict adherence to a belief lacking evidence. Also, I don't know what to make of your Hitler comment. It's probably the worst attempted comparison I have read in my life and surely one of the worst Hitler references I've come across. Next, Christopher Hitchens wrote the book to convince others to gain a new perspective that they're desperately lacking. I'm glad he did.
Well said... I am ... ( 5 days ago by Clyaton)
Well said... I am a christian (don't really go to church just basically believe in God). I have discussions with atheists and pagans (I live with 3 atheists). The only people I will talk to about religion are the ones who are not condescending and insulting.
look a little ... ( 5 days ago by Clyaton)
look a little closer... It's just an analogy.. I can give you another! Anywayz so what if religion was USED BY MAN to do those things.. Men use any excuse they can get in order to get their way.. Does anyone 'GET' this? Besides... Religion USED TO CAUSE WAR... Now it only causes actual war in very few places. Besides.. Statistics and encyc.'s don't lie.. Out of 1,763 wars, 123 wars were based on religion. (Encyclopedia of war, 2005)
Clayton: Religion ... ( 5 days ago by wauzers)
Clayton: Religion used to cause wars, but not anymore? Only used in a few troubled areas, such as Indonesia and Sudan, Serbia, Bosnia, C
ôte d'Ivoire, East Timor, India, Iraq, Kashmir, Kosovo, Kurdistan, Nigeria, Philippines, Chechnya, South Africa, Tibet. Ever consider religion used for genocide, rape, murder, slavery, abuse against homosexuals and women, not just wars. Since religion is not used for all out war much anymore, its
ok.Of course religion used by man to do some awful stuff
Travis: Excellent ... ( 5 days ago by wauzers)
Travis: Excellent statements about atheism. Right on. Thanks
Clyaton: You are ... ( 5 days ago by wauzers)
Clyaton: You are right religion is not involved in as many wars at present as it was in the past. Religion does not have the control over government and people it once had. That does not mean its no longer and hindrance and a danger to mankind and civilization. We see such examples everyday on the news. Thats why people of reason and open inquiry need to step up and denounce religion for what it is, but also protect the idea of free speech and freedom of religion.

Dascata: 1) ... ( 2 days ago by wauzers)
Dascata: 1) Religion does not get a pass if it shares a cause or reason for wars or confilicts. It would be unfair and dishonest to say other wise. 2)Incidents of religion being involved wars and conflicts in history: Crusades, Inquisitions, Dark Ages, The French Wars of Religion 1562-1598, Wars in Spain, The Thirty Years War 1618-1648, Jihads, Second Sino-Japanese War, Saxon Wars.

Afghanistan, C
ôte d'Ivoire, Cyprus, East Timor, Indonesia, province of Ambon, Indonesia, province of Halmahera, Kashmir, Kurdistan, Macedonia, Middle East, Northern Ireland, Pakistan, Russia Chechnya, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Ugunda. I dont have the time to list the details of each conflict, but info
is easy to find on the internet or current news.
1)All the other ... ( 2 days ago by dascta1990)
1)All the other causes of wars do get a pass from the likes of you because you all care about is the fact that religion has been a minor factor in wars fought centuries ago. This is so you can continue peddling the lie that religion is the root of all evil. 2) How many wars has religion caused LATELY? According to Hitchens, religion is the biggest threat to humanity today! And don't you say the Second Sino-Japanese war because that's BS.
Lately? 1) The ... ( 2 days ago by Luchiadh)
Lately? 1) The continuing wars between Islamic branches in the Middle East. (Take note of the Iran-Iraq conflict for example.) 2) Until recently, the conflicts between Protestant and Catholic in Ireland. 3) The issues between Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam in India, Pakistan, and Ceylon/Sri Lanka. 4) The nineteen perfectly faithful monsters that thought that flying planes into two skyscrapers was a good way of advocating an anti-Western agenda. It's war to them.
1)The Iran-Iraq war ... ( 2 days ago by dascta1990)
1)The Iran-Iraq war was not caused by religion - however I'll accept there is conflict between different groups of Muslims.
2)Problems in Northern Ireland were caused by the fact that there are some people who feel that the six counties of Ulster should remain part of Britain and some people who disagree. 3)Problems between Muslims and Hindus in the Indian Subcontinent and be directly traced back to the British Empir
e where different religious groups were played off against one another.

4)9/11 was a direct reaction to American Imperialism. An irrational reaction maybe, but a reaction nonetheless. What happened on 9/11 was nothing compared to what America has done to the whole world. What I'm trying to say is that the biggest threat to the world today isn't religion, it's the United States.
Dascata: United ... ( 2 days ago by wauzers)
Dascata: United States has its share of causing problems in the world, but I believe more of the blame belongs with Tryants, Dictators, Oppressive and Corrupt governments, along with tribalism (big problem in Africa).
Array ( 2 days ago by dascta1990)
To wauzers:
1) Stop picking and choosing what you reply to. 2) How can you say that regional tyrants, dictators etc are more to blame for world problems than America? America bombs countries all over the world and has been doing so for years.

hey.have you seen "zeitgeist " ? if so what do you think ? no doubt that there has been cross pollination of cultures and myths.religions were designed around these myths. its worth watching :)

dascata: 1)To be respectful I will only respond to your comments with your respond to me.
2) Americas bombs are most responsible for problems alll over the world? I beg to differ. The conflicts in Africa and oppressive regimes such as Iran, N. Korea, Africa, and Southeast Asia have nothing to do with current American Bombs (not including the past regarding the world wars, Vietnam and Korean War). American bombs do cause great conflict and problems in certian parts of the Middle East.

This line stood out: "not including the past regarding the world wars, Vietnam and Korean War". The obvious response is why? Of course you include the past. Take Iran for example, America played a significant role in orchestrating the overthrow of Iran's Prime Minister and led to the Shah ruling as an autocrat. This needs to be remembered when thinking about the Iranian-American relations today. Like I said, America's influence is everywhere.
Brilliant stuff, ... ( 1 day ago by telboy1966manu)
Brilliant stuff, eloquent, impassioned and most of all, quite correct. Religion is and always has been a poison to the develpoment of mankind as a species and it's what keeps us killing each other over and over and over. It's time we got rid of it.
Exactly. ( 1 day ago by seraph101)
