What you have to remember is at this time Top Of The Pops always had their acts miming to backing tapes, but New Order said "Either we play live or you can F*** Off!" So TOTP said ok then play live. However the BBC, where TOTP was taped, has THE worst live sound engineers and this was why the performance is not one of NO's best. The BBC just couldn't handle New Order. Simple as that. But I do agree with hurnreading, it was a seminal moment with my dad doing precisely the same as his.

THANK YOU for posting this. I recorded this a very long time ago from 120 Minutes on Mtv, I believe and lost the VCR tape. They're just there playing music, not concerned about their appearance, posing or moving around stage. I love this apathy which is such a difference than most bands these days (other than some grungy stuff), heck even with later New Order you have Barney dancing around. Plus it's soo cool looking at the setup... Wayyyy advanced for their time... look at them keyboards!

The Orgy version was a mere carbon copy. New Order created it, Orgy did a karaoke version.
Much more difficult to be a pioneer than a cover band.

Yes, the singer is not the best and this live performance is one of the worse I've seen of the song. This still remains: Orgy are nothing compare to New Order. This band made history, nobody will remember Orgy years from now.

It had long been the show's policy that artists would mime to a backing track, but New Order insisted on performing Blue Monday live.
