Ferdinand Joe Lematt aka Jelly Roll Morton was born in New Orleans in 1890. In his early years he drifted around the south as a gambler, pimp, vaudeville showman, and pianist working in the infamous Storyville whorehouses of New Orleans. See Hilma Burts Mirror Ballroom N. O. 1907 in this storyline.
In 1926, Victor Records was getting into race records and was looking for talent. Morton assembled a group who could play the New Orleans "Hot Style" from Lil Armstong Hardins disbanded Dreamland Sycopaters. Their 1926 and '27 Chicago tracts are considered the finest hot style jazz ever recorded. They are to jazz what Elvis' Sun Records are to Rock &Roll.
