The oboe is a really hard instrument to start off. Ive been playing it since beggining of 2008 and im already grade 2. The problem is its not as popular as maybe the Violin for example. Theres so much pressure going to your head, Especially as I used to play the clarinet. But its such an extraordinary instrument. I think some people get put off by the double reed. xD If you're going to learn it, don't give up! After about 60% of a year it will be ok and you'll earn lots of cash!

The type of Oboe he is preforming on is called a 'Rigoutat Cor Anglais Pro' made from African Grenadilla wood. He started using this instrument after hearing the great Neil Black performing on it years ago.
The specs area as follows:
-Paris Conservatory system with third octave key and left F
-Semi-automatic or automatic system
-Automatic system / G plateau system 1, 2, 3
-Automatic system / flageolet
-Prestini system
Certain aditions are possible :
-Thumb plate
-Left C#
-Left F key and left C#

i started with the clarinet and switched to oboe...just like you
i just want to warn you to not put so much pressure on your head
i used to do that and it's just really unhealthy
the most important thing playing the oboe is using your stomach/diaphragm to breath, not your chest
if your chest is moving up and down as you're breathing, i recommend you change your style of breathing

Thank you for pointing out my mistake - The instrument is a "Rigoutat Oboe D'Amore", the other that I mentioned is the English Horn version of that instrument production. (which is what I play mostly so it's prob. why I typed it) LOL

i agree with salamancagrl. i'm learning how to make my own reeds now, but it's hard. my teachers say i have great tone, and i've been playing since 7th grade, so about 5 years now. my oboe is owned by the school, but i wouldn't mind having my own some day.

sigh, just started learning how to play the oboe for about 4 months. i'm having trouble with the right hand fifth finger having to play 3 keys. i dont need to press them all at once, but i've a piece that has c# and C right next to each other and my fingers keep getting stuck. any tips from the experts here?

i played on a school-owned oboe for FOREVER because so many oboes are so expensive, but a few years ago i found a beautiful brand-new rigoutat for only $3600. fox also offers really solid instruments for great prices, and yamaha is beginning to make good oboes as well.

I agree! The people in the top 40 don't have an actual talent, I mean I'm sure some of them do, but others (ex. Brittany Spears) really lack it. All that makes the song interesting for this pop music is the background noises, not the singing. We should make the producers famous, not the singers...
