Ah finally someone uploaded videos of my favourite tenor Joseph Calleja! :-D For 29 years, he's well on his way (if he keeps up his careful training) to becoming one of the finest tenors of our generation. But here, I'm not sure weither it was his nerves (he did look sort of nervous) or it was something else - but he didn't do as well here as I've heard him do elsewhere. Perhaps it was just a bad night.

he really is great. I heard his rigoletto live from the met in New york and he was brilliant! A true natural voice, in the old style of bjorling schipa etc, and a source of pride for the Maltese. Great to see someone so young also interested in the opera world

I agree. Oh! That must have been lovely to see him live in Rigoletto. :D (Although, quite honestly, I can't see him in the character of the Duke as well as I can Luciano or certain other performers) He has that old fashioned sound that's missing largely from singers, I think, in our current generation. Although there are exceptions, obviously. But he does have a truly beautiful voice and from what I've heard he's very down to earth and very nice. :D

I am Maltese i'm studying voice at Ian Tomlin School of Music, Napier Uni (Edinburgh) and I'm so proud that he's Maltese and has gone so far! :-D AND that there is a chance for Maltese classical and opera singers out there...

Calleja's is a voice unlike any other today. We could all learn a lot about vocal production from him. Saw him in Rigoletto at the Met and have tickets to his opening night in Traviata in Chicago.

As he has sung at the Metropolitan besides other famous theatres, he has certainly been noticed for his voice, personality, diction etc. His Maltese origin makes him ideal for singing in most languages I would think.

Entirely different voice. Domingo was shaded much more to the baritonal side while Calleja really is more "Gigliesque" in his sound. The fact that we do have two young tenors like Florez and Calleja gives me some hope for the future. Now if we could only bring along some dramatic spintos and heldentenors as well, I'd feel a whole lot better about the future of opera.

The same could certainly be said for Franco Corelli, Mario del Monaco, or even Luciano Pavarotti. Their voices are there own and their thing works for them. There's no one-size-fits-all approach to singing.
