This is the truth, i was there.
both memorial shows, the first one in london and the one in Hull.
best performance of Michael Picasso ever.
this isn't the one (i can't find it) but picasso is the only fitting tribute to Mick, IMO, of course.

David is a great songwriter, his work during the whole 70s was genius. and on bowie screwing ronson, that's absurd. Bowie kicked out Ronson and the rest of the Spiders because he didn't feel he needed them and because he wanted to do something different, which he obviously couldn't do if Ronson was still with him. Ronson got enough credit during his time with Bowie (one can't even imagine Ziggy w/o Ronson), so that's absurd. Bowie didn't make much money off his music until the 80s.

I knew and know people from that scene. Your full of it, and i know it - first hand.

you weren't involved in it either. knowing people (if you know any, i highly doubt it) who were involved in it, doesn't constitute knowing firsthand about it either. and in several interviews, Bowie has stated why he broke up the Spiders from Mars.

You don't deserve to be slagged'.
The points you make are valid, and very logical as well.
The dynamics you reference happen all the time, and they certainly do apply to Bowie.
Artists who are prolific only keep bands for a brief time and use them to furthur their thoughts at the time, much like a strand anchors a string of pear ls, the bands being the pearls.
A good case is to look a John Mayall's incarnations; there's a veritable who's-who of players.

thank you, finally someone with some sense. i just find it incredibly irritating to hear all the things people say about Bowie and Ronson, as if he somehow owed Ronson so much and then backstabbed him afterwards. It wasn't like the Ziggy and the Spiders from Mars were going to be around forever.
and yes, a lot of artists do that and whether you like it or not it happens, people should know better than complain about something that happens all the time.

It's really not so hard to understand, right?
Having said that, I saw the 'Spiders and they were the shmit and the shmizzle; the real deal, indeed!
As recently as yesterday, I pluggeg in, turned up, and stroked those chords to "Panic In Detroit" on my '71 Gibson Flying "V"; fitted with DiMarzios .

it was never hard for me to understand, but some hardcore Ronson fans (and others) it is. I mean, you don't see Carlos Alomar fans bitching because Bowie stopped using him? and partly i think some Ronson fans blame it on Bowie that he never had much success. I think he should have, and he was worthy of it, but it didn't happen. Why? I don't know. it just did.
"that stuff will keep you young" sure thing.

Thanks very much. Great to hear about Micks start in the biz. Also interesting to hear him be so cool about the lack of earnings when he was a very big part of the beginning of it all. Very much missed.

Iv'e never heard Mick Ronson talk before. A great loss. Bowie owed him a lot in his early days. RCA made a couple of solo Ronson albums after Bowie and they were really good but I don't think sold. His touring with Dylan seemed a bit strange but cool thing to do. RIP Mick.

It is so incredibly ignorant when people claims that Bowie would be nothing without Ronson. And others say he ripped off Iggy Pop, and that his albums with Eno would be nothing without Eno, that he ripped off Stevie Ray Vaguhan, Kraftwerk, Lou Reed, or whoever. The truth is that he is the only renaissance man in rock music, even a greater genius than Dylan. (Even though Dylan is probably a finer poet.) He is the only person in rock music who can be compared to artists like Picasso.

7-7-80,my eighteenth birthday,I saw Ian Hunter w Mick Ronson at Toads,New Haven. One of the greatest Rockin' club shows ever. Packed in and sweaty, people pissing against the stage, rather than lose their place. At the end Mick wiped his sweaty brow and threw the towel into the audience. I wiped my brow and threw it back. Mick gave me "the look of death" Great, great show though!
Interesting debate, ...( 1 month ago by EternalCynic)
Interesting debate, I think I mostly agree. I acknowledge that I'm slightly biased because I think that Mick Ronson was a great guitarist, and that the Spiders owe a lot of their success to his instrumentation. However I think that Ronson also owes Bowie for similar reasons; bands are a dynamic, and it was the combination of parts that made them successful, not any one member. I'm sure Bowie would have been successful no matter WHO his band was, but I doubt that they would had the same sound.
The fact of the ...( 1 month ago by EternalCynic)
The fact of the matter is that he DID borrow lots of things that he liked from all of these artists. Look at "The Idiot" and then look at "Low"; there's a lot of commonalities. But that's where I think Bowie's talent lies: He is incredibly adept at taking what he likes about other people's styles and incorporating them into his own. I don't think that he's ripping them off (and let's be honest, you could make that case for a LOT of modern artists) but you can certainly hear their influence.
I don't disagree ...( 1 month ago by ivankaramasov)
I don't disagree with you. Certainly, Bowie borrows from other artists. But opposed to manny lesser artists who mainly borrows from one idol (Bowie f.ex.) he borrows from a lot of other artists simultaneously and makes something unique from it. By the way, I think The Idiot/Low is not a very good example, because The Idiot is a very atypical Iggy album and Low really doesn't sound anything like Iggy Pop. I think artists like Neu were more influential on Low's sound.

As educated "consumers" I personally don't think it is fair for us to make comparisons or criticisms of individual "producers" of the great music that we all enjoy, - it was melted down and recreated in an era of competition, collaboration, inspiration and occasionally blatant copying. We shall never see their like again, and those of us who had to suffer the barren years that preceded this greatness and were part of the emerging musical extravaganza will be eternally grateful.
