I agree completely, leave it to Patti to ruin a perfectly good song with her unnecessary "whale"-ing. It's called a duet. You're not supposed to upstage the person you're singing with. Anyone that thinks she was good here clearly knows nothing about musical performance.

Too over the top for me. I like how understated the original is, and Patti just screamed it. She's amazing but I wasn't feeling this performance. Pretty funny when she points in Joe's face at 428 though.

What's with some people saying she ruined it by being who she is? Check the record, whenever Patti does a duet or some kind of finale to a song, she is MEANT to come out and pump it up because her high energy is what she's known for and it's contagious. People stand up, the beat drops, the tempo and the volume change. When she hits the stage it's meant to evoke a totally different emotion than before. Check the tribute to Gerald Levert from the 2007 BET awards. You'll see what I mean.

No one else on the face of this Earth could ever take this song to the place Ms. LaBelle took it during this performance. I think Joe Cocker did a great job keeping up with her. This was obviously a very emotional, heartfelt, spirit-filled performance by Ms. LaBelle. There's no way anyone could rehearse what she pulled off. God bless her for her gifts and talents.

My fellow Christians, we must remember that not everyone is where we are in Christ. The devil is a liar. They do not understand the joy of the love of God. Ms. Labelle understands and shares it with the world praise Jesus. She shows her love for the Father to the world, without shame. God bless her. Mr. Preston had himself a good time at the piano, too! And Mr Cocker deserves props simply for getting up on stage at the Apollo, let alone with Ms Labelle.

I can't believe the comments here. You'd rather have someone do some unfeeling version that YOU are comfortable with because you can't understand Ms Labelle's talent or her annointing. Her voice is in a VERY small group of singers with multi-octave ranges. And she's singing LIVE. She wasn't pitchy nor did her voice break ONCE. God Himself gave her that gift. If you have a problem with it, take it up with Him.
