It's a completely natural and understandable phenomenon that people who have questions or distrust for the government will stand behind whoever offers the most freedom (since conspiracy theorists will need freedom of speech and assembly to discuss their concerns) as well as governmental transparency. Our government has been increasingly secretive, and it is nothing more than natural human behavior to come up with theories the more truth is hidden, even with the claimed excuse of security
