Very nice rendition of the Sonata. Especially i like the power of the beginning - the first notes are played very strong according to me - and the part at 5.02: he plays it so wildly, better than Michelangeli, who(in spite of being a very great pianist) puts too much order at that point.

I don' t like this kind of interpretation....well, i don' t like Horowitz very much...these silly movings with his hands, playing sometimes without espression...and this "dry-played" Chopin...Cziffra's Chopin is more-more better than Horowitz's....that is the best!!!(but -of course- it's only my oppinion....)

However throughout the years, the actual definitions of words are skewed by humanities collective connotations. We've strayed from songs being "sung" to just any form of musical composition.

Hahaha. If YOU didn't know Chopin indeed DID compose at least 19 songs which comprise his opus 74. You ARE right that he composed over 30 piano compositions lol...the actual number is over 200 though.
I used the word "song" in my original post sarcastically since nothing irritates me more than those who ignorantly comment on a great work like a Chopin sonata and belittle it by trifly terming it a song.

Remember that this ...( 2 weeks ago by hnkahl)
Remember that this is a live recording when you are comparing it to other recordings you have heard. Part of the reason that this recording sounds a bit bangy is the poor quality of the audio. Horowitz is very difficult to record due to his amazing dynamic range. I have heard him live on several occasions, and I can tell you that his fortissimos could be absolutely frightening. Yet somehow he could draw this thunderous noise from the instrument without it sounding bangy or distorted at all.
Two of the most ...( 2 weeks ago by hnkahl)
Two of the most amazing examples of Horowitz's incredible volume that I heard live were of the Chopin A flat Polonaise during the left hand octaves and elsewhere, and in the Liszt b minor Sonata. Then he could play something like the Schumann Traumerei with such delicacy and yet at the same time have everyone in the audience holding their breath and on the edge of their seats straining and longing to hear every tone and feel every nuance.

Why do you care if someone calls something a song? You know exacty what they mean. There's no need to be such an elitist nerd.
This is by no means ...( 2 weeks ago by hnkahl)
This is by no means Horowitz's best recording of this piece. I have a studio recording of his that is much more accurate and at the same time less disjointed, particularly in the first movement, which in this performance is the weak link. It is the first movement that is incredibly difficult, requiring the utmost power, technique, accurate leaps, etc. FYI, This is the Carter years, Vlad was 74 at the time. FYI, the white house has a piano, but this isn't it. Horowitz always brought his own!!
I agree with you ...( 2 weeks ago by hnkahl)
I agree with you about the elitist tone of some of the comments. On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with trying to use words correctly. You don't have to be accurate, it's a free country. However some people do like to try for accuracy. A "song" is sung. Period. If it's played by a piano or a harmonica, it is not a song. That doesn't mean you can't call a saxophone piece a song if you like. It just wouldn't be correct.

I think it's OK to point out when someone misuses a word, but you don't have to be a jerk about it. Now, don't anybody write and tell me they know of an instrumental piece referred to as a song. I know about these. They still aren't songs, they are simply in the style of a song.

That's just the jargon. The reality is when people refer to a piece of any kind the word poeple us is 'song'.Insulting people because they don't know as much classical music Trivia as you IS elitist.

I was not insulting you. That must have been someone else. I was defending your right to speak any way you like. I can appreciate that a lot of people think it's just being picky to carefully select words for their exact meaning. However there is nothing wrong with people who appreciate the language and choose their words carefully. Don't be so defensive. Try using either "work", "piece", or "opus" when referring to art, music, etc. as a general term for a composition, painting, etc.

Now you're really getting off the track. Yes, I agree with you. Bush is an asshole. He's ransacked the constitution, instituted eavesdropping on us, ignored habeas corpus, tortured people, etc, etc, etc. I can't stand the bastard. This has noting to do with our discussion. It is a free country in the sense that I used the phrase. Anyone is free to use the wrong word for piano sonata if they like. But it's still the wrong word, and someone else is free to point that out. That's my simple point.
