Beautiful! I am so into Hazel Scott. She is such an amazing pianist that's it's really easy to forget that she was a great vocal talent as well. Speaking of talent: Nobody does Foggy Day like Charles Mingus. WOW!!! Look how young he was!

What a talent... what an incredible pianist.. I can't sing and play at the same time and off course, jazz improvisatilnal piano training is so different from classical but..THANK YOU SO MUCH I HAVE NEVER HEARD HER NAME!

You never heard her name because the McCarthy era blacklists of so-called "communist" sympathisers effectively killed her very promising career. One of the items the McCarthy-ites hit her with was the fact that she has entertained Russian troops during World War II - WHEN THEY WERE OUR ALLIES! Some things never change - they just take different forms . .

You should check out some earlier performances of her. Clayton Powell was INDEED a fortunate man. She was talented, sexy... she had it ALL

First I heard of blacklists in the record industry. What label was she on? And who else on that label couldn't work?

And Charlie Mingus and Max Roach went along and created a blacklist? This isn't sounding probable. I know you never claimed they did. I'm just saying the previous comment sounded a bit far fetched--and you just tossed is farther.

alot of blues and R&B artists in the 40's and 50's we'rent allowed to appear on TV, Radio or on major labels because of the color of there skin, Mingus was blacklisted and that is why he started Debut Records with Max Roach-It was really bad at this time-They even had white artists coming in to record black music which led to the black musicians not receiving royalties for there work-Look up Payola scandal and race records...Hazel did perform for the soviets which MacCarthy did not like!

It seems difficult to distinguish between international politics and Jim Crow. The blacklists were created by the industries affected, not the government. Blacks always had difficulty making recordings--and some didn't like that the large percentage of the profits they made went to record companies. So they started their own labels. The racism extended to recording sessions, in that blacks had better get it in one take because they didn't get the studio time.
Being rejected by a ... ( 7 months ago by NAFTALI2)
Being rejected by a big company is more reflective of big executives not knowing the product or audience they try to sell to. You think the execs at ABC knew why people bought Coltrane? All they knew is that he sold records--because he had already sold records. If Hazel were a household name, then ABC would have be listening.
