Deanna's amazing. Stylistically I like her singing better because she uses her voice more like an instrument. I am just glad that Mickey Rooney wasn't in this. He ruins all the films that Judy is in when she was younger.

both girls are equally amazing in their own style, but when it comes to personality and performance, judy was the better of the two...she made it look so easy to catch and hold an audience

The short was filmed in July 1936. Both girls were 14 at the time. (Deanna was six months older than Judy.) By the time the short was filmed, Deanna had already been signed by Universal and cast in THREE SMART GIRLS. TSGs wasn't ready to begin filming until Sept.'36, and a clause in Deanna's MGM contract allowed MGM to borrow her for up to sixty days following its' termination, provided she wasn't filming at her new studio, so Deanna went back to MGM to film EVERY SUNDAY.

Be aware that Judy was basically raised in the live entertainment business, a ten year veteran at this point. Deanna is a novice with little more than a few radio performances under her belt. That said, Judy always was an amazing "entertainer". I see Deanna as the better "singer". I think Judy is the better "performer". As to which you like best it's really a matter of personal preference for styles. I prefer Deanna's on screen persona but both are outstanding.

okay, i'll grant you that deanna has an amazing voice, but singing isn't just about belting out words...it's about making your audience feel and believe what you're singing

There's nobody like Deanna Durbin. Judy too. Where are all the greats?
Deanna, like Judy, ...( 2 months ago by boswell38)
Deanna, like Judy, was superb at doing just that. For a critical evaluation, check out the exceprt I cited from Jeanine Basinger's write-up on Deanna above. (In the "5 Months Ago" section.) Indeed, Deanna's movies constantly called upon her to win over other characters (and audiences) with the persuasiveness of her singing. Her unsurpassed ability to do so was one reason she became a superstar overnight: first on radio, then on screen.

What I find truly ...( 2 months ago by boswell38)
What I find truly remarkable in Deanna's case, is how quickly she learned her craft. Her role in THREE SMART GIRLS is a pretty demanding one, especially for a performing neophyte, and her closeups are among the most intensive given to any performer. But, a few "shrill" moments aside, whether singing or acting, she's completely natural, confident and relaxed in front of the camera. It's easy to see why worldwide audiences took to her so quickly and completely.

Who said that Montserrat Caballe and Freddy Mercury were the first singers who united two different music styles on stage? THIS IS THE REAL REVOLUTION AND THIS WAS THE VERY FIRST TIME! Thank you very much for posting.
They were tough in ...( 1 month ago by sisalrug)
They were tough in those days! Its hilarious and startling when Judy politely tells her father, "You just have no soul. Goodnight." !!! That said they are both a miracle of talent at that age. I think Judy's talent comes across more attractively, and with her own strange poignancy that makes you care about her. Also she clearly has an engaging sense of humor whereas you see no humor with Durbin in this. They both make most of todays stars look like mutts, don't they? Talent does that.

It sounds like I was criticizing Durbin, which I wouldn't presume to do. She's a major talent that somehow got lost in the fanfare of succeeding generations--I don't know why. I read that she retired young & moved to France, & since she controlled the rights to her own films she would not re-release them for television. Probably for financial reasons. But tragically that would limit her fame and would kill the idea of a post-career. Boswell probably knows the real story.

Both of these girls were awesome. I think Judy's style might have allowed her to connect more to the audience than Deanna because she sang the kind of songs that could make you want to sing along. Deanna had a beautiful opera voice and that doesn't lend itself to 'singing along'.

And I wouldn't say Deanna's songs were ever 'belted out', because that suggests
some effort, eg. Christina Aguilera style. Deanna Durbin sings with an effortlessness which is so amazing, especially considering she is so young in this movie. The only difference between Deanna & Judy, really, is the styles of singing each uses. Both girls kick arse!

It's funny that Deanna Durbin had more success than Judy in the 30s. Judy wasn't a household name until Wizard of Oz and by that time Deanna Durbin was already the top box office draw. Since Deanna didn't like doing movies and dropped out. We all know how it turned out now. Deanna is still living. God Bless her.

This is not entirely accurate. While it's true that Durbin never appeared in the "Top Ten" stars of the Motion Picture Herald's Poll, she ranked just underneath (11th, 12th, etc.) for several years. Moreover, she had a much higher box office ranking than Judy everywhere else in the world, including Britain, Russia and Asia, where she was the top box office attraction for many years, where Judy failed to make a similar impression. Both girls became top stars, and rightly.
