I love the way L.M. Montgomery describes the slate smashing scene in the book. "And then--thwack! Anne had brought her slate down on Gilbert's head and cracked it--slate, not head--clear across" (Anne of Green Gables, 149). Personally I always agreed with Anne that he had no right to call her Carrots and I think I would have stayed mad for a good long time as well.
