the most important ... ( 1 month ago by afb3199)
the most important thing to think about, at least for me, was the return on my investment. i had to pay for this surgery with my own money so i had to evaluate if it was worth it. it definitely was. i had the surgery to correct both the functional and aesthetic aspects of my jaw. i am now able to speak, eat, and sleep a lot better. i used to grind my teeth before, but now it is no longer a problem. i feel so much more confident in my appearance now too.

i think 18 is a good age to have the surgery. you want to make sure you jaw has finished growing, so in your case i think it probably has. it really doesn't matter after that though. i know of some people that had the surgery when they were over 40. and i had my surgery when i was 27.
my face and gums ... ( 1 month ago by afb3199)
my face and gums were pretty numb for a long time. there was one part of my face that didn't regain feeling until after about 6 months. i didn't have any problems with sore teeth.

phew.. x-D.. atleast now im not pressured to do it now.. thnx.. :-), uhm, another thing,, my jaw pops everytime i yawn or i open my mouth real big.. but it just doesnt pop, it dislocates so it goes sideways when i open my mouth, and when i close it it goes back to its place.. is that something to be worried about??

it might be something to worry about. i had the same sort of problem before i had the surgery... my jaw would dislocate a bit when i opened it real wide. even after the surgery my jaw popped a lot, but i think it had more to do with the new position of the jaw in the socket because it doesn't pop anymore. it just took some time for the jaw to get used to the new position. you should probably talk to your orthodontist or surgeon if it really bothers you.

Great video man. I ... ( 1 month ago by Mykich)
Great video man. I watched it before my jaw surgery (a week and 3 days ago as of today) and it really answered some questions. One thing I'm wondering now, post-op, though is when do they typically start to loosen the rubber bands? I had read somewhere that they eventually loosen them and give you the go-ahead to eat food with the consistency of "scrambled eggs". I have my first post-op appointment on Tuesday and needless to say I'm really hoping to get these bands loosened haha.

it was about three weeks before my surgeon took out the splint in my mouth and gave me looser rubberbands to hold my jaws together. i think at that point i could eat real soft foods, but i still wasn't able to even open my mouth wide enough to even put any food in.

hey. i am about to have this surgery too. i just got on my dads insurance but i dont think they are gonna cover much of the surgery. do you think it would be best to get on kaisers insurance and wait to have the surgery. because my surgeon said i would be able to have the surgery in about a month. how long would it take for kaiser to cover the surgery. because i heard it can take up to 6 months to a year and i dont want to wait that long.
my guess is that ... ( 4 weeks ago by afb3199)
my guess is that even if you get new insurance and wait, they probably wouldn't cover the surgery because they might consider it a "pre-existing condition". i don't know for sure though. and then they might have some terms of the policy that say you have to keep the policy for another two years or so after the surgery, otherwise you'll have to pay it back. just make sure you understand all the terms of the policy before getting it.

My brother had jaw surgery and his face was swollen for two weeks. All he could drink was gatorade for four weeks. It sucked.

im getting this surgery in two weeks! I'm so scared about the recovery process, how long are the splints kept in your mouth for? Also do most of the noticeable swelling go down in a week or two? It seemed like it did so for you. Great results
I just had it a ... ( 3 weeks ago by DamianColucci)
I just had it a little over a week ago and I'm going to need the splints for a month. Which means I can't move my jaw at all for 4 weeks. The swelling usually goes away around 2-3 weeks; and I've already seen my improvements. With the swelling, it brings numbness so you don't really feel any pain. The worst part? The all-liquid diet. It's torture to drink 3 times a day. I would kill a man right now just to eat a piece of chicken...

That's true, but if it's severe enough they insert "springs" and crank it up .2 mm or so at a time over a couple of months time. My orthodontists did that to a girl 7 years old a few years ago.

i am 22 and I will have the jaw surgery on 22.10 very anxious about it. I have been wearing braces since last Oct. Worried about the healing process. I am looking for a job now and worry also about taking a month-long rest...
How do you learn ... ( 2 days ago by DamianColucci)
How do you learn how to eat after this? They took my bands off but not the splint (another 2 weeks for that.) Having my jaw wired shut for a month; I have difficulty in opening my mouth to either talk or eat. Do I have to re-learn how to do this?
Thanks for sharing ... ( 11 hours ago by gymcrewhero)
Thanks for sharing your videos and opinions, its inspiring. I had my surgery 6 days ago for both upper and lower. I'd like to say you were right, I can now breath better etc, having the surgery was the best decision of my life. I'm grateful my surgery didn't cost much at all! All up, it's cost me 1k AUD. I guess Medicare paid for all my expenses.
