This is one more fragment from the French organ documentary on the Chinese DVD - the fantastic organ in Weingarten, built 1737-1750. The German Wikipedia has huge resolution photographs of the console at http://tinyurl.com/og64h and the disposition.
The organist is André Isoir but in this case I was somewhat less interested in the music :-) He plays the solo line by a curious stretch between two keyboards — I thought it would be normally played on the pedals coupled to some reasonable stop. Perhaps this organ has no sensible (for this piec
e) solo stops coupled to the pedals? The disposition on the Wikipedia does not mention any couplers.

I think he made a right old meal of that. Boring registration choice considering the resources available. Amazing 49 rank mixture; one would presume it's a compound stop otherwise it would probably need it's own windchest.

Just to answer your question Jan, Isoir is adding (!) his own improvised 'continuo' part, hence the manual-swapping. Quite cheeky of him - I don't know how he does it. Shame you don't like it, ZH - I do!

"He plays the solo line by a curious stretch between two keyboards" !!!
Strange rmark ! Of course !
You simply did not notice that he is playing a continuo "under" the solo, like in the cantata !!!!

Must be a real chore keeping the organ in tune with itelf. I do not envy the curator his job!

the 49rank mixture (La Force) can only be played by one pedal key and is not a compound stop (it was meant to give a very impressive ending note at a music piece). It is one of the special stops on this oragan (there also bells, nightingale, et cetera). There is a wide variety of other registrations possible, especially in the pedal. Have you got more of these?

I have one with the Cuculus. The stop consist of four notes, the first two a perfect cuckoo imitation, the second pair a lower pitch version (which the actual bird never does!)

Nice to see Isoir also play an organ continuo part... Bach himself did not transcribe it like this...

Yes, you can tell the reason for the two-manual stretch if you listen to what he's playing! I think he's a pretty good organist to do it that way. Very nice effect. Very nice organ too!

I AWARD THIS 3 GRYPHONS....As while the performance is adequate without particualr negative or positive distinction...the organ itself has such a fully conflictive human dimensional panarama, that just the opening phrases of this video provide a chilling funereality because of the brilliant achievements of the organmaker.
