Cary Grant set the standard for Bond, with out ever playing him. The best anyone could do is play Bond as Cary played Devlin in Notorious. That was perhaps a character closest to the literary Bond.

The two best James Bond's are Sean Connery and Daniel Craig, Hands down. Roger Moore was a joke. Lazenby was good but the script sucked. Dalton was just ok, just like the decade they were made. Brosnan had a lot of potential but took the pretty boy Moore approach instead. He was a let down.

I don't think anyone can play Bond better than Connery. He defined the role, and to this day anyone who plays Bond has that bar Connery set to attain to. Sean Connery is and always will be the best James Bond. In my humble opinion of course.

Cary Grant would have lessened the cheesiness of the early Bond movies, IMO. Sean was fine as hell, but the movies were still kind of over the top, and Cary could have grounded the character in reality.
