Stern is not one of my favorite violinists (lacks imagination often times). However, this is definitely one of my favorite recordings of the Tzigane (Stern also has a great Lalo too). Full of life and passion, just what I love hearing from a violinist.

I prefer Neveu's interpretation!
Did you ever hear Stern playing Barber?
You will come around after heaing that!!

Excellent recording, this is the first time I've heard it. Wonderful!

... I like Aaron Rosland's performance better. Stern has no control about this piece...

have you guys listened to Neveu's recording...it scares the hell out of me.......

ok, if you can't play the piece, you can't complain about how stern interprets it. You pricks get over yourselves!!! There is no way in hell you should be disrespecting one of the most influencial virtuoso violinists of our time!!

I'm not really into violin music, but this piece is awesome! Really like that eerie sound of the Hungarian Gypsy scale. This piece sounds really creepy on cello.
I personally like Henryk Szeryng's version of this is best, mainly the sound, and his style.
Great piece.

Not that I should really Give a Damn...
But Paganini set Violin Playing as High as it Could Go.... Picture Things without him...
He is wonderful, ... ( 8 months ago by sonata1992)
He is wonderful, but what matter of it if most of them can't play it? That's doesn't say much at all. I wouldn't call most people here "critics," but you certainly don't need to be able to play it to have taste. By your logic, it would be perfectly fine to say Stern shouldn't be aloud to comment on a cellist's performance because he wouldn't be able to play it himself.
How could you say ... ( 7 months ago by jdresser2)
How could you say that about a beautiful violinist. It is his own interpretation of the piece. If you were a musician you would know that everyone has there own style.

I believe that Tzigane is a little bit about discontrolling your self. But, you know, it's just my opinion...

what a wonderful imagination, what a powerful expression... I love Stern and miss him among the world of alive
Just a small detail ... ( 5 months ago by janneyuki)
Just a small detail, but what he does at 05:19 just blows my mind...One of the greatest recordings of this piece.

People that comment ... ( 2 months ago by Kurtyoungblood)
People that comment on youtube AMAZE me. From the first note you can just hear his imagination and "gypsyness" coming out of him. Criticize all you want, but this is a great master's interpretation and that's all there is to it. It's damn good.
Have you heard ... ( 2 months ago by minor7b5b9)
Have you heard Stern play "Ziguernerwiesen"(Sarasate)? It's based on Gypsy airs, & if that doesn't bring tears to your eyes, nothing will.

P. was a musical & instrumental genius, but to make a statement like that is a bit disconcerting. When talking about technical genius, comparisons mean very little. You may "prefer" Paganini but that doesn't mean he's the best.
You're saying if ... ( 2 months ago by minor7b5b9)
You're saying if you can't play like Isaac Stern, you have no right to mention someone you prefer to him. Gimmee a break! Heifetz was no slouch either.

What an absolutely amazing interpretation. Stern plays this piece exactly the way it should be played.

I agree 100%.I don't know who I was responding to when I gave that reply. Isaac Stern was a great master (not to mention a great teacher). Please accept my apologies.

I think mu4990 was trying to say something that I stronlgy believe too: by a common sence , you shouldn't criticize an artist's playing ,unless you are at least as good as he/she is.And actually, not even then.
This piece ... ( 1 month ago by uncleroyhoggins)
This piece definitely has a gypsy tinge...I have never heard this version, with this kind of accompanyment...harp doing the piano parts...pretty cool...
