Through her company's film division, Harpo Films, Oprah Winfrey has produced projects based on classic and contemporary literature that have garnered the highest industry honors for quality acting and production. cademy Award®-winner Ellen Burstyn. In 1998, Harpo Films produced the critically acclaimed Beloved, a Touchstone Pictures feature film based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Toni Morrison, which co-starred Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover and was directed by Jonathan Demme. Winfrey made her
acting debut in 1985 as Sofia in Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple, for which she received both Academy Award® and Golden Globe® nominations. She also has been lauded for her performances in the made-for-television movies Before Women Had Wings (1997), There Are No Children Here (1993), and The
Women of Brewster Place (1989). The Great Debaters is a fictional story inspired by Wiley College's winning debate team of the early 1930s. Academy Award® winner Denzel Washington steps behind the camera for a second time to direct. He joins fellow Academy Award® winner Forest Whitaker and co-
stars as Melvin B. Tolson, the legendary coach. Harpo Films' Oprah Winfrey and Kate Forte produced with Todd Black (The Pursuit of Happyness) and Joe Roth (Mona Lisa Smile). Filmed primarily in northeastern Louisiana with a few days in east Texas, production started on May 14, and ended on July 16,
2007. Then, production moved to Boston to film the key Harvard scenes at the prestigious Sanders Theatre in Memorial Hall as well as turning the Wang Theater's foyer into South Station circa 1935. Monday, July 23, 2007, was the last day of filming. (Via Satellite)

Oprah is a GREAT producer. The Executive producers are the Weinsteins. Denzel did an AMAZING job as DIRECTOR & ACTOR. Forest Whittaker did a WONDERFUL job. The lead debater on the team is a POWERHOUSE!!! What a GREAT TALENT Denzel Washington discovered!!!

Yes i read up on these guys after i heard about the movie. They did indeed stretch the truth. For instance they did not ever debate with Harvard. It was actually the University of Southern California who they destroyed in debate and not Harvard... But American Gangster was a fabrication too as are most movies that are BASED on a true story...

The Willie Lynch speech was written in the 1700's. Yes, by all means, please send me the writers you have. I visit the Black history museums weekly and have intricate discussions with historians that still educate me with letters and documentation to back up the information. I'd love to read/ research whatever information you have. THank you!!!:)

The most interesting thing about the Willie Lynch line is lynching and other forms of cruelty did happen (and still do for that matter, in some form). These were some of the most hideous and terroristic crimes in American History. Why do you think all those male slaves who were obviously stronger than "masur" were so afraid to get the best of him?" Fear and brainwashing are the easiest ways to control others. So, C'mon FCM, that's a no brainer.

OPRAH IS another fine example of being a"POSITIVE PROFILE IN AMERICA, she has the heart of divine truely giving, she was in HOUSTONat THE ASTRODIOME to help give compfort compassion and assistance to all those from NEW ORLEANS which went thorough THE KATRINA Event and now in THE MOTHERLAND as well, she was well connected when she spoke in SEATTLE for THE BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS PROGRAM during the GOODWILL GAMES IN 1990.

I cannot believe, that some people have commented below concerning the facts about Harvard being a stretch of the truth. It's just crazy to think that after watching such an inspirational movie that all you walk away with is the urge to research whether it was Harvard or not. The debaters lives & what they went on to achieve for Freedoms Sake following their youth is what should be remembered & that this the most important TRUTH :))

Thank you OPRAH & DENZEL you must have done a beautiful work. in england it is not released,that tells me it is something extremely beneficial for MY type of people,anything that is good for us is not given to us and most of us seem to move-on and forget about the matter, but i am well prepared thanks to my king EMPROR HAILE-SELASSIE, - look out - get out and get what is rightly yours, and that is what i am going to do;to go and look for the DVD.and i'll get back to you with my verdict.
