Why was this scene so famous? I first saw it before I saw the movie and assumed it took place near the end, but I was surprised when I learned it took place in the middle, and didn't even have the desired effect of bringing her back to him, it was only later on that that happened.

Okay, so a lot of people think this scene is cheesy or they don't get it. The point of it all is...it is a romantic gesture, perfect for Lloyd. Lloyd is a pretty simple guy and this simple, but romantic gesture and display of his love for her is absolutely perfect.
