to answer your question I will quote Jarek (www.chinafrominside.com): "spear in Bagua is called "(Double headed) Snake"; the other reason is that in applications it is based on the idea of a snake reacting to an attack - when you attack its head, the snake strikes with its tail; when you attack its tail, the head reacts; when you attack its body, both the head and tail react. Another feature of Bagua (double headed) spear is that it applies the idea of using long weapon on a short distance"

this routine could be done with souble eneded spear as well and nothing will change, you would perform in exactly the same way. idea about souble headed snake means you use both ends to attack, doesn't matter if one is the blunt end. you can hit or stab depends on what you have

It's the idea of the movement that is important, to add the force required is up to the performer, if combined, how could it not be effective? Much more so than a blunt undirected attack lacking fluidity.

All weapon need space, dagger, knives, even tooth picks. The best weapon is the body itself, but I feel human use weapon due to the fact that they do not want to train the body to that hight. unlike the sword a spear in my hand feels like a living creature, fast, roaring, and seeking its target. Yet when not in combat its a friend aiding you in long walks, dancing with u as the birds sing, it even helps relax you after trainning. The correct use of a spear is to me is like a creature.

All weapons do need space. A knife (or toothpick) needs less space, but has less reach. The spear has the greatest reach, but needs the most space. The jian has the best compromise.
No weapon will ever be better than any other, but I still respect the sword's usefulness in many situations.
