The teacher would use a simply melody, very similar to what's used at the beginning and end of this routine. The purpose was to teach the sounds of the consonants when matched with the vowels in the alphabet.

i think curly screwed up his line right before the gals called him a dope. where he should have said "el-u-lu", it sounds like he said, "a-u-lu", with the "a" like the name of the letter "a". i wonder whether that was part of the script. maybe they called him a dope because he messed up the line, or maybe because he was waving at them.
the great thing about the stooges is that it's funny without the viewer even having to follow the plot line.

Have you actually seen this particular short before? the Stooges aren't really professors, they're impersonating them. What else are they suppose to teach? I would have loved to learn how to swing the alphabet at my school!

It had to be intentional because the music track was pre-recorded. He may have blown the line in the recording session, however, and they didn't think it was big enough of a blunder to retake. This was before multi-track recording, so the orchestra and vocals would've all been recorded simultaneously. Time was a factor, too.
