Yes indeed, when Perez Prado left Cuba due to Communisim in the 50's, he arrived in Mexico City and was welcomed by the ballroom dancing public. It lost speed in the 1960's due to the ever changing music scene.

Wrong. Castro took over Cuba in 1959. Therefore there was no Communism there in 1950. Capitalism was in full swing there. Perez Prado went to Mexico in 1948 to work in a film with Ninon Sevilla, where he first created a sensation. According to Sevilla, she was responsible for bringing him to Mexico.

there are so many versions of Damazos' arrival to north america, that now I'm kind of scared to try and share musical history.
Correct me if I'm wrong, the Mambo blew up more in Mexico than in Cuba, especially in the Distrito Federal.

The Nephew tells me that very sadly the lady in the film, died from a massive heart attack on February 18th , her name is Raquel Maceda. The dance team on the video clip was known as Raquel y Rolando. They invented the Mambo. Prior to that she danced with his mother and they were known as "Los Caramelios Cubanos." his mom got married to his dad and the aunt teamed up with Rolando. His mom still enjoys dancing to this day,of course right now she is devastated. Respect .

Well, I am a Mexican film collector and can tell you that most gangster/rumbera films (1949-52 about 20% of films)) had to have a mambo song in it. At least 100 films have a dance scene or Prado doing the mambo. Many, many mambo scenes. The mambo in Mexico was a "craze! Extremely popular.

My two sisters and I were fortunate enough to be a part of Maestro Perez Prados last tour to Japan before he passed. The tour was in October/November of 1987 with 26 concerts all over Japan. We also appeared with him at his last Los Angeles performance that year at the Hollywood Palladium. Maestro Perez Prado was an incredible man that could walk into a room and capture the attention and respect of all without saying a word. We absolutely adored him and he treated us like family.
