A very powerful big band. Amazingly Sonny Payne was a fantastic showman but looking at him now I liked his other drummer better. I forgot his name.

It wasn't Butch. I think Shadow Morton? I liked him as a plr much more. You can see how stiff Sonny plays in this one. He's a showman beyond belief! But NOT a killer.
I still love Count.

You liked his other drummer better eh? Well, that other drummer would be either Papa Jo Jones, Gus Johnson, Louie Bellson (live in Sweden), Butch Miles, or Dennis Mackrel (sp?)orrrr maybe even Buddy Rich, but the Basie band with Buddy Rich was VERY rare, But Buddy did do some gigs with CD and the orch.Oh how I wish THAT had been recorded. All that being said, if you are talking about earlier Basie, it would be Jo Jones on drums.

I'm embarassed to have forgotten about Papa JO. What bothered me about remembering this video is how STIFF Sonny is playing. Papa was always smoother in style. Buddy was better as well. Butch was good too. So was Shadow. Count is still a killer.

Papa JO was the best with Count. I know Sonny well but after 40yrs of watching I guess I see Sonny as more showman than player now. Sorry no harm intended.

The saxophone solo ...( 3 weeks ago by bminorscales)
The saxophone solo is indeed by Frank Wess, but it is on tenor as opposed to alto. Wess plays both of those horns, plus flute, and he is the composer of 'Corner Pocket.' The mustached gentleman to Wess's left is lead alto player Marshall Royal.
My bad! Frank Wess ...( 3 weeks ago by bminorscales)
My bad! Frank Wess wrote several pieces that became permanent numbers in the Basie book, but 'Pocket' is of course by Freddie Green. Please pause while I take my foot out of my mouth.

Oh, I have no doubt that this is the greatest band of all time. They wrote the book on swing. Basie may not have been an incredible composer like the Duke or a fantastic soloist like Goodman, but man, he sure was the most incredible bandleader ever.
