Rest in Peace, Bubbles. You did more to bring opera to the masses than anyone.

What a blessing Beverly Sills (Belle Mariam Silverman)was to opera. Her warmth and charm made one of the most misunderstood art forms accessible to millions. Rest in peace.

For me roles like Elisabetta show clearly why Sills was one of the legendary artists of all times. She was such an intelligent singer, a real master of the ability to join music, virtuosity and drama. She used that basically leggero voice with a braveness and sense of "excitement" that few ever had. She was a thrilling artist indeed! We'll miss her!

I loved Beverly Sills as both an opera singer and as a wonderful person. I always sat in the same section at the New York City Opera. In later years when she no longer performed, Beverly Sills became a general manger. Her box was close to where I sat. She radiated warm feelings from where she sat. There was always this warm smile on her face.

sometimes we forget that opera is performance....if you didn't know who sills was(if possible) you would say that it was Queen Elizabeth singing......i just turned the sound down and asked my partner who was on the screen - and he said Bette Davis as Queen Liz -there you go! and now that he's left the room...oh, BEV - my favorite aria...Rest in Peace - I'll always love you!!!!

I remember that in "Bubbles," her autobiography, Beverly Sills said that she would not sing the title role in "Madame Butterly" because that character was so passive. Watching her as the powerful, dynamic Queen Elizabeth I makes perfect sense in this context. I saw her live on stage at a tribue to Carol Burnett at UCLA in 1985, but would have loved to have seen her as the Queen. What a great lady! She brought opera to the masses.

She and Burnett became best friends after their 1976 concert at the Met.
Saw her in her Met debut 1975.

i so totally agree with you about Bubbles being such a wonderful person. This aria is her at her best in her later years. That high D always brings tears to my eyes, and her presence onstage was astounding. She has opened my soul and allowed me to sing opera in a completely different way... for that iam forever grateful. The Heavens are ringing with beautiful song now...
