Ben Goldhirsh sat down with Jeffrey Sachs in New York to talk about his campaign to end extreme poverty in Africa by 2025. Sachs wrote the END OF POVERTY and is the director of the UN Millennium Project and The Earth Institute at Columbia University.

The government in these countries IS the problem look at the trillions we have spent only to watch these countries become more impovrished. The people are now being cared for by the West while the corrupt govt officials continue in their ways. Aid is not bad but we need to address the issue on the most basic level. Mr. Sach's is a UN official we should expect much of nothing from him. Bono is all about an ignorant empty feel good campaign.Talk to actual Africans ask them what the real prob is.

I think this reporter asked some pretty loaded and dramatic questions, but Sachs did a nice job of answering questions and getting to the point.

To all the people that want to join his crusade of helping the poor people in Africa - follow Nike's advice- JUST DO IT -and stop bitching and moaning that it's not getting done!!
I find his presentation hypocritical - on the one hand he says that he doesn't want to rely on government to solve his problem, on the other he's bitching and moaning that the government is only spending only $40 mils. One more thing - welfare ain't going to end poverty - capitalism and the rul
e of law will.

I think Jeffrey Sachs is doing everything in his considerable power and everything he can think of to end poverty and improve economic conditions. He has been willing to work with governments and government solutions, but is also willing to do whatever he thinks is practical. I hope to present to him our contribution to this cause.

What about the welfare gaps that capitalism tends to create? Surely there still needs to be welfare distribution. Personally, I think you need to mesh as many economic ideologies together and take the best components. I don't think free market capitalism alone can end it
