The sad reality is that many Americans are so sensitive to preserving 'heroism' and 'memory' of victims that their uneducated nationalism spilt over into this competition. Even after the extra footage, I believe Simon did roll his eyes at the VT reference, but only because he regarded it as a vote-winning tactic. It's ironic that 'liberal' America has such self-moralistic fascist overtones these days. :(
