This is also the case for all the alveolar consonants, out of which chinese speakers (because the sounds are produced in the same alveolar point of articulation) can have a hard time producing. Alveolar sounds are [t, d, n, s, z, l, r] most of which [t, n, z, l ] are the most prevalent and [d, s, r] are the more difficult: Thus, "understand" would turn into [un-duh-staan].

Due to the fluidity and vocality of chinese, the excessive use of both the lateral and retroflex liquids (l & r) in English can cause a Chinese speaker to have trouble producing the retroflex sound they have never used.

First of all, English IS NOT easy to learn, and it is a disgrace that many of you people posting on here are making fun of this video! I must say that phonologically Chinese and English are quite different, in tone especially. Because English is SO monotonic, and chinese is a tonal language, there is a need to stress the tonic syllables in English words, for a Chinese speaker. But in doing so, it creates a phonological dissonance which brings about a "foreign accent".

Trying to learn english via a computer with a deep sounding american accent has to be pretty difficult. Having learnt chinese at school,I can see how he is trying to pronounce english with a tonal style that doesnt exist in english. This is what creates a type of sing song effect.

It is your need that will help you through your learning process. You have a grate courage in showing how you try to learn so hard. I admire you for your efforts and don't give up. I am a Spanish person and learned English, and i am doing very good since some people who hear me talking sometimes cant tell that i am Spanish and they get confused.
