EVERY time I hear this song it takes me back to being on vacation with my family out west, particularly the day we were driving around Beverly Hills, going to the Brown Derby and Mann's Chinese Theater and I believe the LA Farmer's Market. The memory is a little vague since it was 30 YEARS AGO! Oh gee, has it really been that long?!? I remember it was a BEAUTIFUL summer day and I was so happy (I'm always happy when I'm in California!) Love Rafferty 'cause he's wicked chill AND oldschool AND here-and-now. Reminds me of St Etienne, especially older stuff. If you've seen "Swingtown" on CBS (US TV), you see/hear more, and it's so sweet. Life before microwave? Helmet on yer handlebars as you bike to football practice? Your parents KNEW your friends? The song was written while he lived in Dundee in a flat on Dura street. The street had a locally famous bakers on it (Wallace's Land o' Cakes),this turns Dura street into Baker street. I'm sorry to point this out as the lyrics don't paint a good picture of my home town.
