Auggie, forests ... ( 4 months ago by ClassicCity17)
Auggie, forests ecosystems require regular fires, so there is always going to be pollution. I agree that we should scale back suppression efforts, but I don't agree that environmentalists stop the management of forests. Low government budgets stop the management of forests. I was a wildland firefighter with the USFS for 3 years and I saw it first-hand.

At one time there was regular clearing of the under brush. As you know it feeds fires readaly. As for pollution, if the forests were managed, there would be less fires, less polution.
We only started ... ( 4 months ago by ClassicCity17)
We only started clearing of underbrush recently. It has been generations of fire suppression that has allowed underbrush to accumulate and cause the massive fires we see today. Before this "management" of fire suppression, frequent natural small fires kept the balance. We should have learned long ago from American Indians who themselves, started prescribed fires.

the 747 rules ... ( 2 months ago by jasong19711)
the 747 rules because if you have a FLEET of these they can deliver MORE tonnes of water/retardant around the clock than the smaller aircraft can. Oh every aircraft HELPS but cost wise this is going to be the best in the long run!

in FACT, if you used a fleet of THESE 747s in tandem with a fleet of fire fighting DC-10s, you could effectively cover all of the USA 365 days out of the year! All the smaller aircraft would be for support!

ClassicCity17-- of course the Indians failed to mention how many times that Chief Running Horse forgot to put out the campfire and whole forests burned for weeks or until the rains came! Humans LOVE to try and slant their history for the best!

I agree! Proactive controlled pre-burning of woodlands will cut a lot of this sh-- out in the future making these jets a last resort!

The 747 IS one of the most efficient Per Payload pound and in a fire fight, that means efficiency. There is also a reason the thing is STILL in new production. Its a great design. its cost effective to maintain (compared to anything else in it load capacity) and its one of the most reliable jets in use.
both less efficient ... ( 1 month ago by lesodgers)
both less efficient and more difficult to fly. The AN 225 is also a gas hog.

well if you let all the debris and junk pile up on the ground for years without letting it burn like it naturally would in smaller fires than you have bigger problems like this..

We don't age aircrafts based on how many years it has been since they were put in service. We age them based on their flight hours.
