I was struck here by the fact that Michael couldn't seem to find his tears, even when he was alone... he had assumed the leadership role among his friends his whole life, and also bore the burden of what they experienced in the war... this makes this simple, understated scene all the more devastating, powerful & truthful to the character.

Compare this to our president who laughs at our troops in the field, or Bill Clinton, that guy never seems sincere

what a truly powerful scene... the wonderful music flowing in the background is able to truly open up deniro's character and show the viewers his vulnerabilities and his inability to release his emotions due to the stress and duress he is under as the leader of his friends... lost love is the hardest love of all to get over

The scene that has ...( 2 weeks ago by BOGNOID2000)
The scene that has the most meaning and truly expresses the emotion of being a Vietnam Veteran (for me anyway)is when Michael is hiding behind the sign across the street from the trailer (his home coming party),not wanting to come out until everyone is gone. That is exactly how I felt when I came home and I still have to hide the fact that I'm a Vietnam Veteran (thanks America).

Deer Hunter doesn't ...( 1 week ago by jksonny)
Deer Hunter doesn't get as much attention these days as Platoon or Apocalypse Now or Private Ryan or even Metal Jacket and I'm not sure why. It's just as good as Platoon, which I think is the best war movie of all time. Is it b/c of the length? The lack of action? The depressing ending? The fact that the director flipped out later? Maybe it's b/c the story doesn't take place only in war-related, military environments. Also, it could be that the R. Roulette scene overshadowed the movie itself.
