BIG SUR Calif. 1969
A musical documentary of the 1969 Big Sur Folk Festival, filmed in a chaotic style reminiscent of Woodstock. It features performances by Joan Baez, John Sebastian, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Joni Mitchell, and the Combs Sisters.
Some of the finest folk singers and musicians in the world positioned themselves on the edge of some of America's most glorious scenery for a farewell to summer and a celebration of nonviolence in mid-September. It was the sixth annual Big Sur Folk Festival. The festival, held on the tree-shaded
lawns of Esalen, also differed from other recent celebrations in that here the "scene" did not eclipse the music, but merely served as a complement. According to its producers, Nancy Carlen and Paula Kates, Big Sur was designed as a "performers festival," an opportunity for artists to come together
after a hectic summer on the festival circuit for some peace and solitude. Crosby Stills Nash and Young played the final set, as on Saturday, repeatedly bringing the thinning crowd to it's feet. For a finale - with the audience pushed forward around the pool, closer to the performers now - everyone
at the festival reprise "Oh Happy Day".

Hold up. Your profile says you are 36 and you just joined last June. That means you would have been no older than -1 at the Big Sur Folk Festival of 1969. That kid looks more like 5 than -1. What did you do to look so much older?

Heh! Good question! My wife created our log-in just so that I could comment on this video (we are not big users of this site). She was probably nervous about website security. I was born in 1963 so that would make me 6 in that clip. I remember lots about that festival, including working at a "sand candle" booth and making/selling these weird hippy candles. I am a public school principal now....

Our home in Big Sur was one of those little hot spots where musicians would gather, and someday I am going to write about growing up there...wild...in Big Sur. Joan Baez, or David Crosby etc. and my dad playing guitar until the wee hours of the morning... It was a pretty magical time. It all changed in the mid seventies when I was about 10 and the "Jesus Movement" swept through Big Sur...everyone got "saved" and about 30 families all moved out of BS together to straighten out....

I look out at the crowd watching and listening to Joan, and I think I see the faces of so many that I've seen at Obama rallies, and Hillary rallies. I wonder how we got to the places we've come to in our lives, and how we've survived through the years. For me, Joan has gotten me through so many tough times, so much sadness, so many joys and triumphs. Always there, always bringing pure spirit and grace to those moments...

How did we get to the places we've come to in our lives, we boomer idealists? Thanks for posing that question, Johnmcd7. "Through the same troubled waters we carry our times". All the flowers that we planted will bloom. Look at the little boy running in the video, and the babe in its mother's arms. Innocence and hope are reborn in every generation, thank God. Congrats on surviving the tough times. Keep going to those rallies. The stars in your sky are the stars in mine.
