The secret to any good game of D&D regardless of the edition is a good dungeon master who knows the rules but is not encumbered by them, who is able to adapt and fly by the seat of his pants if necessary and is not an asshole. You also need a good group of players that get along, work as a team (or at least work as a team out of character) and are not too distruptive to everyone elses play. In other words they understand it is not a competition and are not out to ruin everyone elses game.

Honestly the edition doesn't matter. They all have their ups and downs. The most important this is how well you adapt that version to all your players play styles. We have been playing D&D homebrew that was originally based on 2nd edition since the mid 90's. However it has adapted over the years to things out of the newer editions that we liked better and discarded those things we all agreed did not fit our campaign. Whatever you all like is what is the best.
