Oil on the road leading to crash into soft trees, Highway 11~12 on Jeju Island.
Oil on the Road
On the 99 road going down hill to Jeju, 10% plus grades.
Mt. Halla is the mountain that makes up Jeju Island and it is the ride that is the Number one ride for mainlanders that come down in the spring and summer to ride, the 11/12 road crosses on the East and 99 road crosses on t
he west, both get a lot of snow and ice in the winter and this damages the road, so as soon as the road thaws out in the spring the road crews go to work repairing the road damage,
I left Jeju-shi and ran 11/12 south to Sogwip'o-shi to check out the road when it opened then rant it the next weekend
, going over the second weekend the road was great, all the sand was cleared and very little damage was visible and I did not see any work being done. When I came back late in the day road work, oiling the road had been done and as far is I can tell other that the usual road work sign one finds ever
y half kilometer in Korea the road was fine when I had come over earlier, so I was running a little hot not expecting OIL, so I just did a pick the softest tree and slowed down, I was doing about 5 kph when I left the road and landed in the trees. This was on a turn and the rear wanted to slide out
when I tried to turn.
I was still right side up and on the bike when a Vanload of road workers stopped and came to my rescued, about six people picked me and the bike up, carried it back up to the road and asked me if I was OK, then drove off down the hill. After I pulled the tree limbs out of the
bike and chain I was OK.
What can I say, you have to keep watching everything and have luck as well I guess. I learned to ride in Dirt Bikes and have had a lot of experience with trees, rocks sand and other ways of stopping fast, I am a very slow learner.
NOTE: This was in South Korea and they
have mandatory no fault insurance, also liability is sort of left to each, if you fall down you need to learn to walk so it is your own stupid fault, if you spill hot Coffey or tea on your self it is your own problem, if you drive in the construction Zone of South Korea be careful.
Ride safe
