Vague but many years ago I heard an interview with Stevie,she said something about this song in regard to Tom Petty's wife.Being good friends,she asked his wife how/when they met.She had a strong southern drawl and said at the age of 17. Stevie thought she said edge. Quite frankly the song makes more sense with that story. Did anyone else ever hear this story? It was many years ago. It would have been somewhere during 80'-84' and most likely on the King Busicut Flour Hour show on the radio.

Yes - I heard TP tell this story at Christmas 1985, in a live interview. Don't remember the radio show though... Jane Petty was credited on the album for inspiring the song, and a caller had asked Tom why.

That ONE part,"I'm a few years older than You,Is for Jane and Tom petty". Jane talked to Stevie about Tom, when they first met...at the AGE of Seventeen. Jane has a southern accent,sounded like she said Edge of Seventeen.

I love Stevie, really I do. I've seen her dozens of times (first at RCMH in NYC for The Wild Heart tour). But over the years, she has SO many conflicting stories, so many contradictory tales. The drugs have done many a number on her mind. The whole Prince thing was in total contradiction to what she told us during 'Storytellers'. But, senile or not, forgetful or not, or just living in her castles in the air, I sill gotta love the ol' mooncalf!
