the plane was damaged by a SAM and lost altitude. they regained control at the low altitude and stayed there to avoid radar detection. but the SAM damaged the bomb bay so that is why he went down there to fix them.

He was sick when they were ready to shoot Kong's scences and Kubrick went out of the studio and ran into Pickens and asked him to fill in with cowboy hat and all. I'm reading a Kubrick biography at the moment and it goes into a fair bit of detail about Sellers' total unwillingness to play the role. Amongst other things, he cited the accent as a primary reason, insisting he just couldn't get it right. What's more, the details behind the switch to Slim Pickens are nothing like what you've described, teembeee. Where did you hear your version?
