Yea, most people ...( 1 month ago by gonzo1275)
Yea, most people don't see the deeper meaning he is going for in his films. Too cerebral for most. If you have read any Nietzche, 2001 would make a lot more sense, as well as A Clockwork Orange, and Full Metal Jacket...and maybe The Shining as well. The same basic theme/truths run through most of his films, if not all of them. The man is a genius.
"People who ...( 1 month ago by gonzo1275)
"People who complain about this film merely don't get it." Very true.
Kubrik did say it was open for interpretation. But if you've read Nietzche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra (Ubermensch)it becomes very clear what he was trying to say in this film, well, pretty much in all of his films.

The viewer must watch EVERYTHING in this film. Dialogue, props, gestures, setting ...
Watch the use of food/drink throughout the film. Keep in mind the 'watering hole' in the space station ...
The film is a kind of litmus test.

Yea, you won't find filler in any of Kubrick's films, especially this one.
It's been years since I've seen this movie, but the only watering hole that I know of was with the apes. It may be that it's just another way they were trying to point out that "man" is still in it's infancy...like eating baby food through a straw or having to re-learn how to walk in space...man b eing like a fish out of water.

Hmm, I don't remember that. I'll have to watch it again or see if I can find it in the book.
Another thing I've noticed is that both Stargazer and Bowman have the same characteristics. They can be characterized as Nietzche's Ubermensche (or it's potential)...or even Timothy Leary's Futant...able to push the envelope through natural selections peak...discovering "the good trick" (Dennett) before the others. For example, using the bone as a tool.
