True, there was a safety platform with mattresses in case he fell, but it was rather far below him much of the time (I heard that on the commentary on one of the DVDs), and he used to tell a story about when they tested the platform with a dummy, and it bounced off the platform and fell to the ground. Certainly they took precautions, but there was still an element of danger there!

this stunt wasnt actually performed as is,ie not on on the side of a skyscraper in downtown 'where-ever',it was actually a mock scructure built on a hill overlooking the city,giving it the sense of scale you see.
altho some of the wider shots are obviously from a real skyscraper ie the shot of HL hanging from the hose seen from outside a window looking down.
