this made me feel so sad! i love mickey and judy and i really wish she hadn't ended her so messed up. she *could* still be alive today and doing more than shirley temple ever had, and we could still be seeing much more from her. that's why this video made me so sad. maybe the pair would've ended up together...

The reason great emphasis is put on Garland's mature voice is because many people, including vocal masters, critics and fans (including I) prefer and are most in awe of the musical and emotional mastery and vocal pyrotechnics to which she treated us with her voice in the 1960s. The combo of the rich, round, dark timber of her mature voice (masters refer to this particular quality as the "fat" voice) and her astounding natural technique made for a devastatingly stunning listening experience!

What you have said parallels what I've read about Mahalia Jackson's voice. In the 30's Miss Jackson recorded with Decca in a high, nasal voice quite unlike the rich, powerfully awesome instrument of the 50's and 60's.
