When my great great grandparents arrived in Illinois (from lovely Baden Baden Germany) They cleared 100 acres to plant corn subjecting only their own family to the torture. They never even dreamed of restaurants or sidewalks.

caroljeanne: I think there's a difference between "speaking your mind" and speaking without information. So if a white person wants to speak her mind and say (for example) the affirmative action lets unqualified minorities get ahead, then she should check her facts and see that white women have benefitted more from aff-action than blacks of either sex. To carry on being outraged about such a nonissue -- "racist" may not be the right term... maybe petty and privileged

jilltumbling: Can you explain the compulsive "my grandparents were immigrants" justification? I think it's fair to acknowledge both that not all whites were slaveholders and to say that in legal and economic terms, even working class whites and white immigrants have had more rights and protections than the native-born black population. Today the same holds true when comparing black immigrants to native-born.

Where is the racism in Wright's comments? Tell me. Jeremiah Wright is not a racist. Get that in your head. You want to see a racist, buy a mirror and look into it. You just might find one.

Well, I'm an old white fellow, raised in the South (USA), and I find no offense in Reverend Wright's comments.
Yes, the chickens have come home to roost! We are guilty of international crimes. If you don't want to believe that, it's OK with me. But if you run around, waving your flag, and claiming to be the leaders of the free world, you are, quite simply, mis-informed. The US is only the police force
of the Crown. Thugs. Pure and simple. Bill Moyers can't tell you that, but I can!

I don't agree with your definition of 'racism', but otherwise, I'm 100% with you. I found nothing wrong with Wright's comments and most certainly there was nothing racist about them, either in his interview with Moyers or in that sermon that so many heard a short soundbite from.
