There's a partial vaccume, but also other gasses that are harmful to the enviroment. In the UK the gasses are extracted upon disposal of the CRT and delt with accordingly. When I worked with a charity we were charged £7.00 disposal Per CRT to cover the cost of gas removal.

I guess we all had fun with old TV sets when we were kids. First to go were the glass "Valves" throwing them against walls etc, then see who could throw a brick hard enough at the screen so it wouldn't bounce back and hit you in the shin! Kids have it hard these days with the LCD screens etc... LOL

"Lightning" damage in most sittuations is simple and easy to remove damage. Theres no need to shoot that monitor. It could be cheaply fixed and still used. But oh... I forgot that U.S. wastes largest amount of natural resources and produces biggest piles of junks in the world. So statistics must be proven;).
