I saw Greta at a local Highschool Jazz festival where she gave an incredible master jazz workshop for all who attended the festival; than that evening she put on a wonderful show using the local college jazz combo. If you love the music of Ella, Lady Day, Lena Horne and other Jazz greats; you should go hear Greata sing.

Mimi Fox is a great guitarist! Check out her CD "Perpetually Hip" to hear her playing.

Very impressive indeed. I've been out of the music scene for a good while, and didn't know anything about the "newer" performers. Youtube is a great help. It's just fantastic to see a female jazz guitarist who can play THAT well.

Mimi and Greta, does it get any better than that?
Going to see Mimi at Monterey Jazz Fest in two weeks, can't wait...

Good heavens!! I just realized Mimi is an absolutely splendid creature in addition to her musical abilities. I cannot continue without her.

I thought after the last exchange I should check out more on Mimi. She plays much better on this video- remember my comments were relating to what I was hearing in the solo piece and I stand by those. However in this video she over plays in the accompaniment area, take Freddie Greene or Emily Remler (particularly her Bossa stuff) and you will see that the aim to keep out of the pianists way and fill the space between that person and the bass.

Actually, I agree with your observation about over-playing against the piano. I never suggested she was the second-coming of Pat Metheny. I still think she can play well (and I do have some knowledge) and I suspect she will improve greatly as she develops more experience.

I suspect our differences arise from vastly different perspectives. Very briefly: My current situation is such that I am pleasantly surprised that there are ANY jazz musicians (let alone good ones, let alone female ones) still around in the world!! I have been out of the music scene for a rather long time, have been ill and not playing, and I currently live in a place where, if i say "I play jazz guitar pretty well" people ask me if I'm talking about Guns 'n Roses!!
Ha ha!! I know - ... ( 11 months ago by playwellplease)
Ha ha!! I know - we are a dying breed. I have lost two friends in the past week who were role models to me when I was developing and learning. There are many technically adept younger players coming up through the multitude of schools and universities that purport to teach jazz. However I see no signs of a young Wes Montgomery or Pat Metheny - but plently of clones sticking on lick learned from a book on the end of another. I keep looking on YouTube for the next "Big-Thing" - fingers crossed

I could't help but comment on your note. I totally agree. All you're getting out of the cookie cutter schools are little robots. The jazz scene is dead in America, indeed all cultre is. Mediocrity is our new God.

"High-cultured" Germans use to cry over the allegedly superior music of Mozart and Wagner while tossing 11 million human beings into the gas chambers.

I understand where you're coming from. America is far from Nazi Germany. However, when you have young Americans who ware their underware outside their clothes, You have a problem. I just think it's terrible, that the best the country can produce is Brittany Spears and turns it's back on it's own great music. I see your point though.
It was an ... ( 9 months ago by franco6719)
It was an interesting coincidence that i read you comment after reading an article about the death of high culture, where "high culture" was code for classical music and everything else, including jazz, was pop culture. BS. On the other hand,I agree that things are going too far when the absolute worst of American culture is ALL that people in other countries, like this one, are exposed to and imitate. It's hyper-capitalism that is really destroying western culture, IMO.
Without good music ... ( 9 months ago by zinnington)
Without good music we lose our humanity. It's been proven over and over again. I've also seen the horrors of political correctness in jazz as well to. Blues also. It can't be jazz if it's not played like this etc. Cultre to me is where people know how to do things. That ain't happening anymore.
Well, I think you ... ( 9 months ago by Carehuea)
Well, I think you gotta be in it (the scene) to really see who or what's coming up. My experience is different. As a jazz musician and educator, I see plenty of young talent coming up through the ranks but the state of jazz, or rather, Jazz's ability to create profit is such that most of these musicians are relegated to playing irregularly in small clubs/bars for peanuts. Jazz is still alive - but only just, and it's mostly due to selfless commitment.
The jazz scene is ... ( 9 months ago by franco6719)
The jazz scene is actually fairly healthy in the bigger cities like Rome, Milan and other parts of the north of Italy. Down here in the boonies, though, it's either American-style popular music (hip-hop or whatever) or traditional folk music. So, it's great to have things like Utube, Itunes, and the Internet in general available to the world.
